1. Fill Feeders (And Then Add Extra)
Chickens always seem to eat more when you’re away—at least that’s how it feels.
Before leaving:
- Top off all feeders
- Set out an extra feeder if you’ll be gone more than two days
- Store feed in sealed containers to keep pests out
The last thing you want is to come home to hungry hens and an empty feeder.
2. Double Check Water Sources
Late May heat can sneak up fast, especially if your flock is spending more time outdoors.
Make sure:
- Waterers are completely full
- You have backup water available
- Containers are clean and algae-free
I also like adding Coop Care AciMate to help keep water cleaner and fresher while I’m away—especially if temperatures are climbing.
3. Predator-Proof Everything
Holiday weekends often mean empty neighborhoods and families traveling—which can make predators more active.
Before leaving:
- Check coop latches
- Inspect fencing for weak spots
- Secure automatic coop doors
- Remove leftover food scraps that may attract pests
Raccoons don’t take holidays off.
4. Do a Quick Coop Clean Before You Leave
Trust me—future you will be grateful when you return.
I always do a fast cleanup before heading out:
- Remove dirty bedding
- Clean nesting boxes
- Wipe down roost bars
- Refresh high-traffic areas
All Purpose Coop Cleaner makes this part quick because it’s easy to spray down surfaces before adding fresh bedding.
Then I spray Chick Fresh to help control odors and ammonia while I’m gone—especially during warmer weather.
Coming home to a fresh-smelling coop feels a lot better than walking into a mess.
5. Check Ventilation
Memorial Day often brings the first real heat of the season.
Make sure your coop has:
- Proper airflow
- Open vents
- Shade
- No blocked windows
A hot, stuffy coop can become dangerous quickly.
6. Ask Someone to Check In
Even if you’re only gone for a short trip, having someone stop by gives major peace of mind.
Ask a friend, family member, or neighbor to:
- Refill water if needed
- Collect eggs
- Make sure your flock looks healthy
- Alert you if anything seems off
And yes—I always leave overly detailed chicken instructions.
No shame.
Enjoy Your Weekend
Your chickens don’t need fancy boarding accommodations—they just need a little preparation before you head out.
Take care of the basics, enjoy your Memorial Day plans, and come home to a happy, healthy flock waiting for you.
And if you’re doing a pre-trip coop refresh, All Purpose Coop Cleaner and Chick Fresh make it much easier.
Because vacation is a lot more relaxing when you’re not worrying about your chickens the entire time.
